How do I know the test line is working?

Open the OScam web interface (usually port 8888 on your receiver’s IP) and look at the Readers page. A healthy reader shows status CONNECTED within a few seconds of the restart. Then switch to an encrypted channel: the Status page should show ECM requests flowing to the reader and answer times in the low hundreds of milliseconds. That number is the one to watch during your whole test, because it is what decides how fast channels open.

If the reader sits in OFF or ERROR instead, work through these in order:

  • Re-check device, user and password. Copy them from the email again rather than retyping. A trailing space pasted into the password counts as a wrong password.
  • Confirm the receiver has working DNS. Ping the server hostname from the receiver’s shell. If the ping fails but pinging an IP works, set a public DNS server like 1.1.1.1 in your network settings.
  • Check the port is not blocked. Some routers and a few ISPs filter unusual outbound ports. Testing over a phone hotspot for a minute tells you quickly whether your home connection is the problem.
  • Only one active connection per line. If the same test credentials are entered on two receivers at once, the server rejects the second session. Remove the line from the box you are not testing.

What should I actually test in 48 hours?

Do not just confirm that one channel opens and call it a day. You are auditioning a service you might pay a year for, so make the two evenings count:

  • Zap through the channels you really watch, not a random list. Note whether each opens without an annoying pause.
  • Leave a busy channel running through prime time. Freezes cluster in the evening when servers are under load. A server that is clean at 22:00 on a Saturday is a keeper.
  • Watch the ECM times in the OScam status page. Consistent times are worth more than occasionally fast ones. Wild swings predict freezes later.
  • Pull the plug on one reader. Disable Server 1 in the web interface and confirm the picture survives on Server 2. Redundancy you have not tested is redundancy you do not have.
